October Outreach By the Numbers

Last month, we focused on outreach and publicity. I am proud to share the following stats about our efforts:

  • Our organizers contacted 126 educator union presidents across Massachusetts. This represents more than 25% of all NEA and AFT affiliates in the state.

  • 3,925 rank-and-file members received information in their local president’s newsletter about our movement.

  • 525 fliers were distributed in various union spaces.

  • Our first reel has over 56,000 views in fewer than 10 days. The reel is a collaboration with State Rep. Erika Uyterhoeven and Luisa de Paula Santos, a Somerville para and Cambridge School Committee candidate!

These heartening numbers spur us to keep going. Our goal is to finish our first round of outreach to local union presidents by the end of December.

Three Easy Ways to Help

Here are some low-effort, high-impact things you can do to help the movement grow:

  1. Forward this newsletter to a friend who shares your ideals, who believes hope is an action, or who is looking for a productive outlet in this dark world.

  2. Order fliers (link here) from Massachusetts Educators for May 1, 2028, and distribute them at your school site, your union’s events, or wherever you see PreK-16 educators.

  3. Present to your local board about the May Day Movement and our organizing work. Here’s a script with everything you need!

Upcoming “Vets Say No” Protest

The same coalition behind the “No Kings” mobilizations last month is supporting veteran-led national protests for Tuesday, November 11th. “Vet’s Say No” is about saying no to ICE, to occupations of our cities, and to the normalization of fascism. Let’s keep the energy and community strong, especially as the colder months roll around.

As of publication, there are three planned protests across Massachusetts: Boston, Northampton, and Holyoke. I’ve committed to the Boston event, carrying the spirit of my late Uncle Tom, who was active in Veterans for Peace. I hope you’ll be out there that day, too!

Notes from the Organizing Committee

The Organizing Committee builds out our communication structures, increases rank-and-file membership engagement, coordinates legislative advocacy, and so much more.

We meet virtually for 30 minutes per month. Our next meeting is Thursday, November 20th at 7pm.

All are welcome to join the Organizing Committee! Use the button below to sign up. Meeting links are emailed out the week of each meeting.

Planning Ahead for May Day 2026

In all cities and towns, May is the peak of municipal budget season. Coordinated, local actions on May Day 2026 send a powerful message that each of us is committed to fighting to fully fund public education.

In the coming months, we are meeting with state union leadership teams, various regional bargaining councils, and others about possible May Day 2026 actions, in hopes we can support increased participation across the state.

We’ve dedicated our March 2026 organizing committee meeting—Thursday, Mach 19th from 7:00-7:30pm—to supporting May Day 2026 mobilizations. All are welcomed, so please mark your calendar and sign up for the zoom link here.

We can do this.

I’m heartened by the dozens of conversations I’ve had with local union leaders in the last two weeks (and which inspired the name of this newsletter!). It is so clear that we are fighting the same fights in our respective communities. I have full faith that if we set up strong communication structures among locals, then we can combine our efforts and go after a bigger target: the Massachusetts state tax structure.

In solidarity,

Megan
