The Energy is Palpable

On the last day of summer, I’m celebrating all of the successes and solidarity we’ve seen in the labor movement this season: the first-ever Labor Day Parade in Boston (pictures and videos here!), Teamsters Local 25 winning a 46% raise from the multibillion-dollar company Republic Services after a months-long strike, educator unions winning common good bargaining demands for their community, and so much more. In the face of ever-increasing violence and authoritarianism, #SolidaritySummer offered countless examples of unions boldly and successfully fighting back.

Our Strategy for the Fall

Organizing Committee members are beginning outreach to their local unions, caucuses, and other networks. The goals are to raise awareness of the May Day 2028 Movement, expand our communication networks, and bring more organizers into our planning work.

If you’re able to present to your board, too, our script can help! You do not have to be an Organizing Committee team member to present to your board.

Thank you, Rep. Erika Uyterhoeven, for talking with me about public education, labor, May Day 2028, and the Massachusetts state legislature.

We’re also starting to reach beyond educator unions, including to state legislators, school committee members, and PTAs. Stay tuned for more information about these burgeoning collaborations.

Upcoming No Kings Protests

A coalition including May Day Strong, 50501, Women’s March, AFT, and Indivisible is mobilizing for more No Kings protests on Saturday, October 18th. Events are already scheduled all over the country; find one near you here. Let’s turn out in even larger numbers than Labor Day!

Showing Up for Our Immigrant Neighbors

At last week’s Organizing Committee meeting, we talked about how ICE is actively harming our school communities. A member from Education Association of Worcester shared some resources, including how to become a verified LUCE member and flyers about the LUCE hotline:

Please share in your networks.

We can do this.

The world feels really heavy, leaving all of us playing defense indefinitely. Organizing for May Day 2028—which I see as our opportunity to make a coordinated, nonviolent stand for a better world—is my antidote to despair. This work gives me hope, and I wish the same for you. I believe in us and our collective power.

In solidarity,

Megan

P.S. My introduction to unionism was from watching Newsies as a kid. Thirty years later, the original movie soundtrack is still my background music when I’m writing and my reminder that “wrongs will be righted if we’re united.” Seize the day, fellow educators and activists!
