We are the Massachusetts chapter of a growing coalition of rank-and-file educators across all states and territories who are building and flexing our collective power in defense of public education.
That includes demanding appropriate working conditions and benefits, as well as the resources and care—within and beyond the classroom—that students need to thrive.
We focus on organizing and mobilizing efforts within Massachusetts. However, we work in conjunction with other states and organizations to share strategies, prepare for national union assemblies, and coordinate actions.
We believe in:
Those struggles are ongoing and not limited to May Day 2028, but our work is grounded in preparing for a mass mobilization.
The Organizing Committee meets once per month for 30 minutes to strategize how to grow our power and state-wide engagement. Our goal is to have every local union represented on the organizing committee.

Why May Day 2028 for a mass mobilization?
The United Automobile Workers, under the leadership of Shawn Fain, issued a call for a general strike on May 1, 2028, saying, “it’s our opportunity to create a crisis for the billionaire class to win more for all of us.” We couldn’t agree more.
We seek to answer the UAW’s call, knowing that other unions and community groups across the country are also organizing for the same day of action. We are stronger together.

I’m busy with my own contract campaign. Why should I get involved in this?
We understand! All union power starts with your local, and your contract determines so much of your working and living conditions.
However, we do have a counterargument:
We imagine the most common response you hear from municipal management or district leadership at the table is, “We can’t afford that.” Maybe they’re bluffing and maybe they’re not. Regardless, we know the state of Massachusetts has the money to fully fund all of our schools.
And that’s where we—the Massachusetts Educators for May Day 2028—come in. One local union cannot pressure the entire state government, but a coordinated pressure campaign from all 428 local education unions in Massachusetts can.
This campaign is ultimately about winning the state funding formulas, legislation, and tax structures to sustain public education in every city and town across the Commonwealth—which helps all of us when we bargain with our respective municipalities.
May Day 2028 is so far away! How are you preparing now?
For the 2025-2026 year, we are focused on our internal organizing and awareness campaign. That includes:
1) Reaching out to every local MTA/AFT-MA union in the Commonwealth
2) Expanding our organizing committee
3) Building local-level awareness of May Day 2028 through phone banks, visiting board meetings, and attending conventions
4) Supporting local-level actions on May Day 2026
5) Coordinating for a resolution at our state annual meeting to further our work in the years ahead
6) Identifying supportive legislators in the state senate and state house
I want to get involved, but can’t give 30 minutes per month for the organizing committee. What else can I do?
We understand! Here are many other ways you can support the movement, but with a smaller time commitment:
1) Subscribe to our monthly newsletter, which includes 15-minute power-building tasks that you can do on your own time:
2) Tell at least five union siblings about Massachusetts Educators for May Day 2028.
3) Organize a local May Day 2026 event (suggestions/resources here) or attend any of these planned events.
4) At your local union’s annual meeting, share the goals and newsletter. You can also order literature (postcards, flyers, business cards, etc.) here to distribute to union siblings from the NEA or AFT.
5) Make a plan with a friend to attend your state union’s annual meeting in Spring 2026 and vote YES on any May Day resolutions or new business items. Your local union president will know how and when to register as a delegate.
6) Follow and share our Instagram, @maeducatorsfor5128.
